Free Tree Recycling:  Curbside Tree Roundup Week of Jan 6-10th 2014.  Trees must be shorter than 6' in length or cut down in 3 foot lengths prior to leaving curbside or Drop-Off location at PReston Field December 23rd-January 31st.  These trees are chipped by the NLTFPD for local erosion control projects.  For more info call Wast Not Hotline at 775-832-1284 or www.ivgid.org/conservation

GOT Radon???  The only way to know is to test for it.  January is National Radon Action Month with free Radon Test Kits December 1, 2013-February 28, 2014 available at the Incline Village Recreation Center at 980 Incline Way.  *While supplies last.  Tuesday, January 28th at 6:00pm UC Davis and the Tahoe Environmental Research Center at 291 Country Club Drive will also offer Free Radon Test Kits and a certified Radon Mitigator will be on hand to answer any questions.  1-888-RADON10 or www.radonNV.com for more information.

SOLID Waste Containerization Update:  At the December 10th 2013 meeting the IVGID Board of Trustees reviewed the proposed revisions to Solid Waste Ordinance 1 and the Solid Waste Franchise Agreement with Waste Management.  The board approved the revisions and will be moving forward with the new containers.  These revisions require specific requirements for the containerization of residential trash and enhanced wildlife-resistant dumpsters for commercial properties.  The next steps are for Board review at the January 8, 2014 meeting followed by a 30-day public hearing period.  Extensive information is available online at www.ivgivd.org/utilities_services/forms.  Service enhancements include:

  • Enhanced Wildlife Resistant Dumpsters for commercial customers
  • Containerized curbside residential service with a licking wildlife resistant waste cart
  • Reduced service rates for customers with permanently installed metal bear boxes
  • Seasonal 'sticker based' yard waste residential recycling program with up to 72 bags collected at noadditional charge between May 1-July 15
  • Community Clean Up 'Free Dump' Voucher
  • Directly Billing from WM
  • Free house/side yard service for disabled customers

I'm often asked if this is a good time to buy a home. Some clients are concerned that home prices may fall further than they have already. They are assuming that the best course of action is to wait for the bottom in the market and then buy. The problem with this approach is that you don't know where the bottom is until you see it in the rear view mirror, meaning until you've missed it!

Home prices are one factor in determining your cost of ownership, but so are interest rates and financing availability. Even though interest rates have gone up in the last six months, they are still near historic lows. Since your monthly mortgage payment is a combination of paying down your principal and paying the interest owed, if home prices come down a little further but interest rates go up, it could cost you even more to service a mortgage on an identical home!

While a home is a major investment, it is also the center of your personal life. It's important to live in a home that reflects your taste and values, yet is within your financial "comfort zone." To that end, it may be more important to lock in today's relatively low interest rates and low home prices, rather than to hope for a further break in prices in the future.
